Final Gender Essay

Gender is repersented in some different ways in both the films The hoilday and Run Fat Boy Run when we look in to both films the messages that are show in the film are quite similar.

Cameron Diaz is a non typical masculine woman who stars in Romantic comedy film called The Holiday which was directed by Nancy Meyers the film was brought out in 2006. The feminine stereotype is challenged with Cameron Diaz when finds out that her boyfriend has cheated on her with younger women. This is a negative part of a man because once they have been with a  woman  for so long they fantasia over a younger women , this is only for some men as others stay faithful to their partners . She then starts to lash out at him and hits him in anger. But the difference between Cameron and her boyfriend is that Cameron cannot cry like other women. Crying is a generally stereotype of women. When we look deeper in to the relationship Cameron is very much the dominative female it is her house and she takes charge. Another stereotype is that a man usually the most dominate in the relationship who takes charge to care for the women.  This is also shown when Cameron has her own business which is making trailers. She puts a cutting room in the house. Another major part is when she actually sleeps with her black belt under her pillow this is another part of her being more masculine than feminine. It shows to the audience that Cameron is strong and independent. The message that I got when i watched this scene was that no would mess with her. Also with the house in which Cameron owns it shows that she has a lot of wealth she is an extremely good business women and she knows what she wants. The clothing in which Cameron wears though out the film shows that she is pure as she wears a lot of white, but by the end of the film she wears some bright colored clothing stating the fact that she is no longer pure, this symbolises that she has let go and is acting more like a lady.

In Run Fat Boy Run the disruption in the film is when Simon Pegg leaves his pregnant fiancĂ© at the altar, this is a not typical male behavior running away at the wedding, so Simon is stereotyped that he is the runaway bride. This is a typical stereotype of women they run away from their fears if they are not ready to commit to their partners, women mature more quickly than man, so with Simon running away it sends the message to the audience that he is not ready to commit to being married. This is the start of the disruption that he loses his family, and he tries for the rest of the film to win his family back but Thandie Newton  doesn’t allow him back in to her life she allows him access to his son. The clothing in which Simon wears is very much feminized his trousers have a flea bottom to them. When we look deeper in relationship it is like the Holiday the women is in control she has to make the decisions, she has the more dominant role.
In both films the surrounding characters act like they are more feminine in the holiday Jack Black acts very feminine by the actions in which he makes he is the typically female stereotype of have an Audi A4 convertible and living in Los Angeles. In Run Fat Boy Run the man that Thandie Newton  is seeing Hank Azaria  is portrayed as a Drama Queen and very much a feminine character with traits of women, he goes to a cycling club which has mostly women, and they way he talks about the workout in legs. Then when they race in the running event Hank Azaria trips Simon Pegg over and Simon Pegg really hurts his ankle and Hank Azaria the alpha male goes off to hospital and blames Simon for what happened he doesn’t have any damage to his leg but he makes out it is worse than it is.
In Run Fat Boy Run there is a scene where we get to see where Simon Pegg works he works as a security guard in a ladies underwear store. Simon Pegg doesn’t look like a security guard they are usually big and strong. When Simon looks in to the mirror you can see that his appearance is more like a woman. Men never check themselves out in the mirror in public it is usually women that do that. This is his only job he has and he cannot afford a house so he stays in a bedsit, which he can’t afford the rent and the owners are consonantly nagging him for the rent, they even have to black mail him in to paying the rent. This just shows that he doesn’t earn much money. This is showing to me that he can’t look after himself when he is on his own, this shows that he isn’t very independent, he is very dependent on his friend to help him. Where it was the night before the big run and Simon Pegg made sure that he used nipple cream to stop the t-shirt rubbing against them. This is a strange thing to do as men generally do, most men just go for a run and don’t bother about outing cream on as it is very feminine to do something like that.
Cameron and Jude Law go on a date this is where cameron challenges the female stereotype of a women.  The way in which she talks to him is like a job interview the words in which she uses makes her sound like a man. Jude responded with can we stop my palms are sweating and this feels like a job interview. Women don’t ask the questions about the man’s business on a first date, they generally talk about other things such as hobbies and such like. When Cameron finds out that he is a widower, he then in his own household becomes a mother and a dad. He talked about buying ballet costumes, sowing these are all things in which women do as mothers for their children. This challenges the father role as he is left on his own, he has to learn how to become more independent as he has his children to look after as well.
In the connection with Run Fat Boy Run and the Holiday both men have had their wives left them but with different circumstances but the big difference between is that Jude Law can cope very well with dealing with his children and has a really good job and a lovely cottage. Then Simon doesn’t have a good job and he lives in a bedsit which he can’t afford to pay the rent. This is a message to the audience that some men can actually show a measure of sucess, and can cope on there own. Also when we look in to it they both challenge the male gender role, in both films there are parts in which they act like females.
In both films gender is represented differently but when you look in to it they both have the same meanings men in films are represented as more feminine as this is what women want to see a man being like. Most women prefer having a man that is more like them as this means that they will have more common. When I look at the films gender is represented with men and women being like each other. In the holiday the women are like the men not being able to cry and being very independent upon themselves. If they had a man to care for them they might not be as business like and they might act differently with having someone to take care of them. Also when we look in to other films in which some of the stars have been in they are given the masculine parts like Cameron Diaz is in Charles Angles which is a fighting and is based around a male audience.
The messages in which both the films are trying to say is that most women in the audience of these films prefer to have a man that can cope without a women in there life. It gives a good mind set for the women to know. The films are both saying that most women are very independent, without a man in their life, they act very strong. Also a big message that is shown in the films is that men can also act very feminine and women can enjoy this having a man to relate to in their life. In my conclusion I feel that both the films in there own way show that women are more mascline than men and they can handle themselves more than men can handle themselves alone.

Important Information about the creating of the Hoilday

The A-list stars have been working on romantic comedy The Holiday, which is also set to star Kate Winslet and Jack Black.

Adorned with Christmas decorations and filled with fake shops the usually quiet street has become quite a tourist attraction in the past few days.

The glamorous visitors, who were in the town all day Wednesday, were seen admiring the beamed buildings and chatting happily with shop owners. Church Street was transformed into the high street of  nearby village Shere.

Shop fronts were turned into a butchers, complete with giant turkeys, a post office and chemist and a bakery. Godalming Station was used for filming on Tuesday evening.

The film company, Waveland Pictures, based at Shepperton Studios, provided security to keep the gathering crowds away from the set.

Local police officers were also on standby although unaffected shops continued to trade throughout.

Wintry scenes have also been filmed in the real village of Shere where a mock manor house has been built and the streets and parish church covered in fake snow. And Godalming will get its own covering of snow on Monday and Tuesday next week.

Delays in the filming schedule mean the stars, who were only due to be in the town on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, will return to Church Street to complete the  scenes.

The film is directed by Nancy Meyers, whose previous credits include What Women Want and Something’s Gotta Give.

Script

Here is my script for a Sequel for the Holiday

Pictures

Here are my pictures of my field scene,  I have taken them in the afternoon, as the lighting at this time i think is the best it could be, I can also have some shadows of trees in my pictures. I Also like the sun in background it makes it look very romantic.

Premises

I had to also make a phone call to the owner of the premises to see if it was alright if i used it for my film studies project.
He was delighted to think that his field was going to be used for something.
I also went to see the man as well and told him what exactly I am going to be doing on the field as well. I also explained some of the pictures i ma going to take just to make sure that I am allowed the pictures that I want to take. The field owner even offered to help me, and if I need him in my film he would be feel honored to be the pictures and film.

Risk assessment

Risk Assessment

While I was taking the pictures for my scenes i noticed a few risks in which I need to overcome while i am on the premises.

  • One of my shots is in the road, so I need to make sure that I have some one making sure that there are no cars coming so they do not get in the way of the shot.
  • The field in which my first scene there is barded wire so I need to make sure that there is no barded wire in my scene. Also I need to make sure that my actors are safe to get to my scene.
  • Also one of my shots I need to hang out of a window so I need to make sure that I don't lean too far out of the window to prevent me from falling out of the window.

Ways I can prevent these from happening is making sure that I have extra people just making sure that there are no accidents. Also i will be having a first aid kit on the premises to, I am also a first aider so there is no need to find one.
Also I am will put out signs around saying that there is filming in progress to stop people form walking around the areas in which I am using.

Script Read through

Here is the Read through video that I created with Abbie Hales
I decided to do the disruption scene which involves Kate and Jasper. The Dialogue in this scene is really good because is shows the relationship between the characters and it can show there emotions. I also found that the dialogue that I used really moves the story forward. By moving the story forward it makes the audience want to know more about the story and they would like to no more about storyline and the characters.
Abbie says:"More speech would help move the story forward which would help create a stronger relationship between the characters.

Evaluation

I think that my wording needs to be improved to make it sound like a Romantic situation. Also I think I need to add more speech in my script doing this i feel i would be able to create more of a relationship between the characters
